Deadline Day Thread

Not a lot to report (as of yet), but I wanted to give my readers a space to discuss todays happenings (and potential happenings). I will be popping in and out to make sure everyone is playing nice.

Let me know what you think. Washburn? Halladay? Pavano? Who will be in pinstripes by 4pm?

*UPDATE (11:36am) - MLBTR reporting that Tigers have acquired Jarrod Washburn for Luke French and another prospect. There goes that idea...

*UPDATE (1:48pm) - MLBTR says Orlando Cabrera to Twins for minor leaguer. Why weren't the Sox interested in him again? Wasn't he a stud for them after the Nomar deal?

*UPDATE (1:54pm) - Red Sox to acquire V-Mart according to Bob Nightengale's twitter. Nick Hagadone, Justin Masterson, lower level prospect back to the Tribe.

*UPDATE (3:16pm) - Red Sox spin Adam LaRoche to Braves.

*UPDATE (3:21pm) - FINALLY! Yankees acquire Jerry Hairston, Jr from the Reds according to Joel Sherman. At least it's SOMETHING. I hope Shelley Duncan enjoys his one night stay in Chi-town.

If Pavano is in pinstripes I will buy a ticket to his first game just to throw some 9 volt batteries at him.

Washburn sounds like it is the most possible outcome but Halladay would be superb.

What about Zach Duke? Should the Yanks consider him?

I love how everybody is raiding the Pirates. If their players are SO good, why have they been under .500 for the past 50 years? The Yanks will not get Halladay, Toronto has asked for Hughes and Chamberlain and if they do that deal I can only wonder why they didn't do the Santana deal two years ago. Washburn hasn't been much of anything for a long time but Mel Stottlemyre fixed him and now he's solid. But what would he cost? Seattle has no reason to trade him unless they get something useful. The most likely piece I see the Yanks trying to get is a bullpen arm. Come playoff time, you never have enough.

The Pirates are like organ donors for the rest of the league - its great.

Also - are the Red Sox going after BOTH Adrian Gonzalez and Victor Martinez today?

The Pirates are a team filled with complimentary baseball players. Freddy Garcia, Jack Wilson, John Grabow are all guys that can be pieces on a championship team, but obviously not going to carry a team anywhere.

I like the Halladay deal. It would be Hughes OR Chamberlain, not both (at least according to what I read. The Santana deal was different because the Yankees had no prospects whatsoever, and he would have cleared their cupboard (not to mention costing them another $130mm).

What another starter does for this team is let Chamberlain take starts off so he is available to start in the postseason, or at the very least doesnt blow through his innings limit where he cant throw at all in October. Personally, I like the Washburn deal. Duke is another good idea, but the cost may be a little high since Pitt is playing with house money now.

Tom-Sox would add one or the other - not both

Jimmy Dugan said...

Qualls is said to be unavailable, and supposedly Towers is asking for teams to bend over and take it in the can for Heath Bell. No go.

By the way, if I see this Red Sox add on the site one more time, I am going to lose my mind.

I heard the Yanks were going after Bannister and were close to getting him but get this - they couldn't afford to pay his remaining $650k for the year and asked KC to pick up the tab. Can you believe it!? Did you ever think you would see the day where the Yanks couldn't afford to throw that kind of 'walk around money' at a guy at the deadline!? Crazy. If that's not a sign of an economy in the shitter I don't know what is. I wouldn't expect much action from the Yanks or any team for this years deadline...teams are just trying to keep the lights on at this point. Or in the Yankees case, trying to keep the steakhouse open.

JD, about the Sox ad on your page - this is what happens when you sell your soul to the online advertising world. Next thing you know there is going to be an ad for Big Papi's extra chunky BALCO salsa on your homepage.

Alright, no attacking other commenters, even the 'special' ones.

I am having a hard time grasping the Bannister rumor. The Yankees spend $650k on shoe shining...

Just got home.. Looks like the Sox didn't give up Bucholz or Bard for V-Mart...

How do they do it?

Bannister news was right from Buster Onley's mouth this morning on ESPN.

Never question my credibility again.

Jimmy Dugan said...

I wasn't questioning your street cred - I was simply referencing the fact that the prospects involved were never mentioned. If they had asked for AJax + $, I would have told them to go piss up a tree, too.

Jimmy Dugan said...

btw, Jay - how do they do what?

They coughed up Masterson AND Nick Hagadone - thats a pretty good haul.

46 minutes to deadline - predictions?

JD,
the ad placement is based on google doing an automated crawl on the text of the site. Since you posted about Ortiz and the Red Sox several times it assumed that the ads were relevant.
BTW, VMart for Phelps look alike Masterson and Hagadone. Sounds pretty good. Hope they can unload LaRoche and his ADD

ESPN Radio - Yanks going after Jerry Hairston

Also, Shelly Duncan has been seen at the team hotel - looks like he was called up

Jay said...

JD - Hadn't heard about Masterson when I made that comment. That's a solid centerpiece for the Injuns.

Jerry Hairston Jr? Give me a break. I guess the reports that the Yanks didn't want to take on any more $$$ is accurate. I have been hitting refresh every five minutes on MLBtraderumors for the past 5 hours anticipating another masterful trade deadline move by CashMoney. What the hell are they going to do in Sept when they have to sit Joba? Maybe C-Money has plans to bring on Jimmy Dugan now that he has come out of retirement.
