The Mets (finally) make the right move

According to SI's John Heyman twitter account (I have one that you should follow too, by the way), the Mets passed on a deal for Roy Halladay. Rumored to be included were Fernando Martinez, Bobby Parnell, Jon Niese and Ruben Tejada. Despite the undeniable talent of Halladay, this is a smart move for a few reasons, but not the least of which is that the Mets are awful.

The Mets are falling like a rock out of contention for a playoff spot, and the addition of Roy Halladay would be futile unless he can also bat behind David Wright. Regardless of how good your pitching is, running five position players out every night that are not Major League quality is too much to overcome (just ask Johan). Stripping your already anemic farm system completely bare to make a half-assed run at a Wild Card is just bad business.

More importantly, in my mind, the Metropolatinos have saved themselves a PR nightmare in passing on this deal. Accepting this offer publicly only to have Halladay exercise his no-trade clause would be a tremendous blow to the team, both internally and in the prison-raping that they would take in the New York media. It also came about this week that even if traded this season, Halladay can demand to be traded again at season's end. So for all of you "wait 'til next year" Mets fans can stuff it.

Sure, Santana and Halladay at the front of your rotation sounds formidable, nay, unbeatable. But even in the stretches where Johan Santana has looked super-human, the Mets haven't been guaranteed a win due to the fact that players like Fernando Tatis that were signed for the purpose of being fringy bench players are being counted on to produce (Gary Sheffield?? REALLY??).

So if Heyman is correct, which Keith Law has already rebuffed, I commend the Mets on having the wherewithal to realize that they suck. Plus, as we all know, Omar Minaya was not giving up a package including two Latin players to receive a white guy in return. (hat tip to MLBTR)

Is it not public knowledge that the rumor was untrue?
Both GMs have said it wasn't true and everyone said that was a package way under value for Halladay.
The Blue Jays are seeking young pitching and yet would offer the best pitcher in baseball for mediocre prospects???

Just a random question... Halladay "demands" a trade after the season.... then what? What does that mean exactly. He has a year left on his contract, is he playing in the NFL and going to hold out.

Whether this rumor was true or not is obviously the major factor, but if there was even the smallest fraction of truth to it, the Mets would have been in line for a big year next year.

Regardless of any if what you said is true. The way you put it is so completely racist, even a rather thick skinned and humorous Latin man such as myself, couldn't stomach reading it. Go through every other team in the bigs and you will a metric-fuck-ton of Latinos on every team. The talent that comes out of the DR (where baseball is a matter of fact way of life) mixed with the fact that you don't need to draft them makes them very inticing. Your message is correct. Injuries have decimated the Met's lineup and the "white guy" in question will not fix that, but maybe you should proof read you blog for class.

I am actually going to respond. Ray, I must say that I am a little taken aback by your statement. The joking criticism about Minaya's affinity for Latin players is as old as Abe Vigoda. To call it a racist statement is simply ridiculous. Of all of the things that I am guilty of, racism is not one. There are a lot of talented Dominican players?? I had no Idea!

I can honestly say that if you are looking for class, head over to River Ave Blues. If my style of humor doesn't cater to your taste, click on something else. Thanks for stopping by.

I'm glad that you took the time to do defend yourself. Maybe you're not racist. I apologize for making any such accusations. I think that what we have here is just a basic difference in what we define as funny. I mean, I don't believe that Michael 'Kramer' Richards is racist. He's just not a real stand comedian and he didn't know how to handle a heckler, so while trying to do something shocking to desperate to get a laugh, but instead Came off looking like an ass.

I've never know where this stuff comes from. I understand that the Mets have alot of Latin players, but really, why is this funny? I don't get it, lots of teams do. The Yankees have a ton. When the Red Sox had Manny, Ortiz and Pedro on the team at the same time, were jokes that I missed?

The reason why I brought up the DR players in the bigs, was to show that the Mets don't have the market cornered on Latino players. I

Again, let me state that I do agree with your opinion on a Halliday trade.

Sorry for my grammar errors. Trying to proof read on an iPhone can be a bitch.

Ray, why would you back down?, this is the problem with us Latinos we back down even when we know we are right this guy is a racist you have nothing to apologize for, if he wasn't racist do you think he would have taken the time to respond. Mr. Minaya and people like you should start to step up to these racist bullies, Jimmy is right on one thing since we do not appreciate he racist remarks lets just keep stepping forget him and people like him trying to keep the latino man down.

Just because a joke has been told does not mean that it should be perpetuated... I don't believe that Mr. Dugan is racist, but, like a lot of people, makes comments without considering the ramifications or the fairness of the statement (and I'll be the first to say that I am guilty of this). I don't think the issue is with how many Latin players the Mets have, but with the Mets having a Latin GM who acquires Latin players. While it could be funny, examining all of Minaya's moves this way hinders anyone's ability to judge him fairly, and may, in the long run, hinder another Latin (or other ethinicity) man or woman's ability to get a fair shake at getting a job...

and really, it isn't even a funny joke...

Dan, I think that the trade deman is a contractual right. If a team does not oblige, then the team is penalized (I'm not sure: is the player released from his contract?)
